This wonderful series of inter-linked tales revolve around an elderly Japanese man, Grandfather, and his friendships with a bird called Sir Raven and a brown dog called Bear. The tales are written in the style of Japanese fables; the prose is stripped down to the minimum and the narrative is gentle - so gentle, in fact, that even the violent moments, such as when a bully of a dog has one of its eyes pecked out, are described in an understated, matter-of-fact way. This is a gentle book of stories suitable for an older person to read to a child of about 5-8 years. From early on in my read, I felt that this book was for Asian children rather than for western ones. Its philosophical/folk lore tone will endear it to the older generation who will be glad of the lack of violence and child challenge in it.
