Menos mal que Freud cita Destruction as the Cause of Coming Into Being numa nota de rodapé. Rá!

In this famously transitional work of 1920, Freud sets out to explain the prevalence of psychic activity that can't obviously be attributed to the organism's inclination to reduce tension, the reduction of which produces pleasure. After all, as a clinician, he was seeing neurotic and hysterical patients--very tense people. So, via a speculative tour of psychoanalytic theory circa 1920 as well as of early-20th-century biology, Freud arrives at the provisional conclusion that there are two drives [...]

Indeed, some may find this to be a pleasure or a pain to read. Given that the theory of instincts was covered by Freud in some earlier works, it was no surprise to find him covering some old ground here. Although I am sure that the pleasure principle is well known, basically it is the suggestion that people have an instinctive urge toward experiencing pleasure and shielding themselves from pain.Of course, any book by Freud would not be complete without touching upon the subject of dreams, and he [...]

Beyond the Pleasure Principle is a short essay that explores the why of the human mind's mechanics. It complements Freud's greater works nicely, but don't let its size fool you. Prepare to read this more than once and pore over Freud's fast-paced figurative language that manages to cover literature, philosophy, biology and more.If literary theory is your thing, then you obviously need a little Freud in your face.

I read this book for the fort-da part, but I was very pleasantly surprised with the rest of it. It's been nearly a hundred years since the publication of this work and yet quite a number of Freud's theses are still on point.

Somebody has scribbled notes on nearly every page of my copy of this, making comparisons to Nietzsche and Popper's telling that I enjoyed reading those more than the text itself.

It's frustrating that each of Freud's works begins with an interesting concept, and then proceeds to meander aimlessly between tiresome pseudo-philosophy and unsubstantiated pseudo-psychology.

I'd rather be dead, folksPP is apparently not generally accepted by orthodox Freudians, but you get the sense that to everyone else, Freud is at his most interesting here. Freud litters BTPP with doubts, reminders that BTPP is mere speculation an exercise in thought. It is a profound philosophical work. What goes beyond the pleasure principle? The repetitive-compulsion. Trauma involves a relationship to an efficacious barrier which poses a challenge to the identity of the ego so great that the re [...]

Pean eneselt taas küsima, kas oli ikkagi väärt oma aega investeerida raamatu lugemisse, mille sisu terviklikult jäi mulle kättesaamatuks. Jah, see on väga raske lugemine. "Seal pool mõnuprintsiibi" kohta on isegi Lacan öelnud: "this extraordinary text of Freud's, unbelievably ambiguous, almost confused""Almost confused" ja mina loen seda veel eesti keelde tõlgituna. Lugemiseks pidin ma endale võtma appi interneti, kusjuures psühhoanalüütilised artiklid on s võrdlemisi põhjalikud n [...]

The book is comprised of 6 chapters as far as I remember. The first couple are fantastic insights into the foundations of the "discovery?" of what we now call PTSD, an interesting observation on instincts to repeat even when unpleasurable, an urge to be active instead of passive and some basics on transference. The book itself is beyond the pleasure principle, there is nothing in Frueds writing style which makes it engaging and enjoyable to read. It is straight to the point science (or pseudo-sc [...]

I wouldn't call this a fun read in comparison to other Freud works, the biology on which much of the theoretical work is based might be a bit superannuated, and despite being somewhat coherent it's not altogether convincing. Still, despite its difficulties it's a fascination in its own way, it has some face-slapping passages, and it's probably key to understanding some of the important writings that follow, in particular The Ego and the Id as well as Inhibitions, Symptoms and Anxiety.

Since I'm not a scientist by any stretch, it took me a while to get through this. It was a very interesting read though. The ideas expressed by Freud are nothing new and no one seems to have expanded on his principles since this was written.

Freud no more to say

A very short work, much of which is quite recondite. Much of what Freud writes he admits is speculative. Yet the idea that there is a life and a death instinct in all organisms is certainly something that can be discussed at a metapsychological level. Freud does raise an interesting question about the very idea of science and its relationship to speculation. Note:"It may be asked whether and how far I am myself convinced of the truth of the hypotheses that have been set out in these pages. My an [...]

This work by Freud represents an important developmental period of his thought and is the first instance that Freud introduces the concept of the "death drive" (Todestrieb). Unfortunately, it's the very fact that this is a work of transition that makes it somewhat lacking. Given that Freud was basically building a discipline from the ground up, the spectrum of Freud's work from The Interpretation of Dreams all the way to An Outline of Psychoanalysis can wildly differ. You are never simply readin [...]

Beyond the Pleasure Principle is an extraordinary book, arguably one of the most important books ever written. Rather ashamed to admit this but I’ve never actually read Freud; given the amount of critiques, good and bad, that I’ve heard and read over the years, I decided it was time to read his work for myself. This book is really a short read that explores the “why” of our mind’s mechanics and his theory that we humans are guided by two instincts; the life instinct, Eros, which preser [...]
