Its not well-done. I'm about halfway through and its just a slow, dull, tedious work of espionage. Unusual to discover this.A shame, too-- because this author can actually write very competently. Rich prose. He simply wasn't bold enough in his novelistic goals here. Uncompelling main character. Setting is stale; the romance is trite and clichet enough intrigue. A spy novel of the world weary disillusionment kind, the kind that Le Carre still is doing even though it was a product of a particular moment in the Cold War. Two operatives, equally alienated to the point that either of them could be a traitor - or not. The American at least gets a love story, the Soviet gets scraps and a death sentence.
