It’s Belgrade in 1991, and the war between Serbia and Croatia over the crumbling of Yugoslavia is underway. On both sides young men are being drafted into a ferocious battle, while elsewhere the militias and assorted other forces are lining up to tear Bosnia-Hercegovina apart… but this is all background and context as well as an inescapable presence in this novel of trying to avoid the war, deal with work and families and pending parenthood: only the conflict with Croatia is mentioned. At the [...]

It was in San Francisco that I encountered this novel. My future wife had mentioned the other in an email. I was nine time zones away, walking in the chilly July air, regretting that I was clad in shorts. I found the book innocent in a narrow shop. I likely paid too much for it. I wandered the streets and began reading it over black bean soup at a place called the Prague Cafe. I took a photo of the cafe: I must still have it somewhere. I finished the novel that night at my brother's place. I tol [...]

Intelektualna masturbacija nazovi pisca.

This book was huge hit during my high school. It won one of the most prestigious literary award in Serbia during horrible political mud which was kind of rebellion against regime. Later there was a theater play which was amazing.

vrlo nazgrapan stil, i na momente izrazito pretenciozno

Depressive fight for survival in the middle of war, drugs and pregnancy. It can make you feel great for what you have, or bad for what the humanity can do (and for what many fellow Czech citizens will currently deny or even approve of happening, e.g. the gravity of current Syria conflict and its victims' situation). Overall a quite refreshing and efficient naturalist style. Arsenijevic should travel back in time and give Zola some writing advice for the sake of all literature students.

At the time it appeared it won NIN's award. I read it and the only reason I could think of why it actually won was that it dealt with sensitive issues of the moment - war, sanctions against Yugoslavia and the way young people dealt with it. But it was such a poor literary achievement. Obvious rip off of many styles without a language of it's own.

a perspective on war that differs from the usual memoir/fiction. war is a constant in the life of the narrator but in an oblique manner; it is seen as the lost limb of a friend, the disappearances of acquaintances due to flight or death, the knock of the draft on the door. the prose is not stellar but worth a read for this view not often seen by those of us fortunate to be ignorant of this life.

3.5 stars. I loved the voice, and would read more by Arsenijevic. The book occasionally felt a little loose in its bones, but the voice is so winning, and so human, that I instantly forgave him. Okay, four stars.

Zanimljiva knjiga.

Topao, zanimljiv i duhovit roman. Jako dobra knjiga. Preporuka za čitanje.

Strange little gem of a book I discovered at a used book sale - about love and war. Great voice.
