Wow! I read this book in less than half a day, and can safely say that there is no other novel that comes close to comparing to this beauty. Jamie Arpin-Ricci has cemented himself as my #1 favorite author to date. And it will take something extraordinary to take him out of that position. If you want to simultaneously have your heart feel like it is being ripped out, and be challenged to (possibly) rethink your attitudes towards the death penalty, then you should read this book. If you are anythi [...]
Very predictable There were a number of grammatical errors that a good editor should have found. It was obvious from the beginning who the killer was. And it was obvious that the intention of the book was to present her view point of the death penalty. The book certainly did not persuade me to change my mind.
This is the story of a mother who has lost her daughter, Mandy Goodman, and a mother whose son, Mark Williams, is accused of murdering Mandy. We see the circumstances of the murder, conviction and execution through the eyes of Alice Goodman and Lori Williams. I have mixed feelings about this very short book. The death penalty is certainly a controversial topic, with compelling arguments on both sides. Personally, my opinion has always leaned toward being against the death penalty, but I often wo [...]
A story of a young man accused of killing his girlfriend. He swears he didn't do it. After years and years of trials and such they put him on death row. This book is partial told by the girls mother and what she went thru in the trial and at the time he was executed. The 2nd part is told by the young mans mother and what all she dealt with and went thru till the day he died. This book will let you see both sides felt thru it all. You may decide to change your mind about the death penalty upon fi [...]
Puts you in the story of the death penalty.
This is a short novella about an execution. There are two narrators. Part I is narrated by the victim's mother, hungry for justice for the life that was stolen from here. Part II is narrated by the mother of the accused and condemned man who faces lethal injection. This is a quick read and gets at some of the issues surrounding the death penalty. Arpin-Ricci is an advocate for justice and a missional pastor and community leader. A compelling story that makes a point without being too preachy.Sup [...]
As a father of just 18 months, I've found that fiction impacts me much more in the last year and a half than it used to. Being a dad has made me kind of an easily-moved guy, and as a result this book about sons basically ruined my night. (In a good way!) The Last Verdict was a powerful little parable that reinforced my conviction that to identify with the crucified Christ requires that we be people of grace, of a justice that flows deeper than retribution.Does anyone out there know Governor Pete [...]
The Last Verdict is compelling, heartbreaking, and insightful. Arpin-Ricci does an incredible job taking the reader into the minds and worlds of two women whose lives were forever changed when a young girl was murdered: the mother of the girl, and the mother of the man convicted for her murder. While the subject matter is heavy, it is not a difficult read: partly because it is a novella, and partly because Arpin-Ricci writes so well. Do not hesitate to read this!
