You can have your cones and interpenetrating gyres; for me, the unguarded, soppy Romanticism of The Celtic Twilight, based on the diaries the young Yeats kept as he tromped through Irish village life, is the best guide to the obsessions and occult yearnings that animate his poetry, early & late. The anecdotes and rambling asides capture the poet in his native habitat, head in the clouds and feet in the bog of an Ireland that never quite was, but that he needed to shake off the bluff rational [...]

I'm a sucker for folklore, especially Irish (and Scottish) folklore, because 'tis were my roots lie.I randomly came across this book while scanning through the Kindle classics store on . Seeing "Celtic" in the title, I immediately downloaded it, not even reading the description. Just the thought of combining classical literature with CelticI couldn't help myself. For being a conglomeration of short tales, this little book was a delightfully light read. If you are looking for a palette cleanser be [...]

Continuing with my plan to read a bunch of Yeats before my trip to Ireland, I finished this lovely collection over the weekend. "I am certain that the water, the water of the seas and of lakes, and of mist and rain, has all but made the Irish after its image." It's this description that makes this collection so fun. There's also commentary on how the Irish fae are mischievous but ultimately generally not truly evil, whereas the Scottish versions are often much more grim and dark. For example, in [...]

İrlanda mitleri, periler, küçük öyküler ve harika bir dil. Pişman olduğum konu ise sadece orjinal dilinde okumadığım için neler kaçırmış olabileceğim.

A whistling seal sank a ship the other day.The Celtic Twilight is not a traditional volume of artfully retold folk-tales, nor a dictionary of fairies in the style of Katharine Mary Briggs. Yeats's book is a sociological and theistic study of the inhabitants of Ireland, mortal and otherwise: the angels, "children of the day", ghosts and demons, "children of the darkness", and most of all, the fairies, faeries, fae or sidhe, the "children of the twilight", those liminal, endlessly equivocal inhabi [...]

At the turn of the 19th century, Yeats and friends collected any and all Irish folktales they could find from the rapidly dwindling rural, Gaeilge-speaking population. Celtic Twilight is part poet's journal, ghostbuster's psychic investigation dossier, and part ethnographer's field notes. Yeats presents a the variety of Good People and shades who inhabit the Other Realms. At times, Yeats convincingly reproduces the narrators' voices, at others, the material inspires his own poetry. But the under [...]

Fascinating and lyrical but contains occasional jarring casual antisemitism and some jaw-dropping classism. Read with the reminder that the author belonged to an early 20th C intellectual elite and a grain of salt.

This was a fun novel, full of short stories. I really liked the mixture of tales and the voice of the author. While this might not make it to the top 1000 books to read before you die, like many of the books are that I chose for this Alphabet challenge, it's still an awesome read.

"Everything exists, everything is true, and the earth is only a little dust under our feet." Amazing read.

I'm actually in love with the Celtic folklore.

The stories told by Yeats were enjoyable to read as well as informative. These stories, told by people living in the not so distant past, describe this world in a way few of us would recognise.

An immensely enjoyable collection of stories and tales from Irish mythology.

Oha.On bir ayda bitirmişim kitabı.11 ay. Bilmiyorum. Umurumda da değil.

DNF - I really tried to finish this book but it was boring and just could not do it.

This book is well named. It contains a number of short sketches that discuss fairies and associated ghost like beings from Irish mythology or perspective. This is not true myth but subtle glimpses like at twilight. I am unsure if these are all Keats creations or if they are built on an earlier tradition. This book is prose (last entry is poetic). I had a hard time really "getting it." Hard to give a Nobel prize winner two stars, but I will say he got his Nobel in poetry and not prose. My version [...]

This did not grab me at allter starting last summer I left it gathering dust for 6 months before finally lifting it again, and it is only finished due to my dislike of leaving things half read. I just couldn't get any magi out of it. The stories felt dull to me, lacking lustre. Just not my thing at all.

Not worth the time.

not at all what i thought it would be. boring.

Gerçekten çok sıkıcı bir kitaptı Kitaptan aradığımı bulamadığım ise su götürmez bir gerçek. Anlatımı çok kötü ve peri masalları bundan dolayı çekilmez hale getirilmiş.

Yes, fairies and demons and the occult - not my bag. Also a lot of dialect that's either beyond my Canadian/American capacity and/or has aged badly.
