Ligeira e divertida essa novelinha da Socorro.

This didn't feel like the YA that I'm used to and it was really refreshing. Great story, intriguing mysteries and beautiful illustrations :)

What a strange and delightful little book. I gobbled it down in one sitting, perplexed and delighted. Highly recommended.

Read the full review at Elgee WritesA few days before her death Samuel's mother asks her fourteen year old son to light candles at the foot of three different saints and then to find his estranged father and his grandmother in the town of Cadeia. During this ill fated journey Samual finds shelter in what he first assumes as a cave. He later learns that it is the head of an incomplete statue of a famous Brazilian saint and is surprised to hear the prayers of the believers from the town of Cadeia. [...]

I liked this book, but I could tell it was an international book. This is not a bad thing, but I could feel how different it felt from American children's literature. The themes of religion are overflowing from the story and I felt like that is not present in most of the children's books that I have read. The story itself was a bit slow to start for me but I felt by the end it tied up the plot lines very nicely. There definitely was a feeling of mysticism or magic that went along with the religi [...]

Fácil de ler, me fez relembrar as experiências que vive no interior do Ceará.

This book starts with Samuel comforting his mother because she is about to die. She tells Samuel to meet his father for the first time in this city and light three candles for her soul. He travels for a very long time ab=and arrives in Candia exhausted and starving. He meets his grandmother for the first time but she kicks him out. He is looking for a place to sleep when he finds a huge hollow statue head that fell off a statue. He decides to sleep here. Samuel discovers that he can hear the voi [...]

Fourteen-year-old Samuel's mother has just died. An occurence she foretold a few days before her death, a talent that all of the women in her family have had, though he did not believe her. Being the only family in his life, Samuel's only purpose is to complete her last wishes. He has to light three candles at the feet of three saints and go Cadeia to find his grandmother and the long lost father he never knew. In his journey to complete these tasks he finds himself living in the decapitated sto [...]

Pro Review:On her deathbed, Samuel’s mother asks him to light candles at the feet of three saints. This request sends Samuel on a journey on foot, which will lead him to an ill-fated village. He finds shelter in the fallen head of a statue of a saint. And soon, he discovers that he can hear the prayers of certain people in the village in that head. This story is true magical realism and translated from the Portuguese by Daniel Hahn. The author worked with magical realism pioneer Gabriel Garcí [...]

I was intrigued the minute I read the premise of The Head of the Saint. It was rather vague, but in a good way because it meant that I wanted to read more and more to really consolidate my understanding of what was going on.The women in Samuel’s family can tell when they’re going to die. Given three tasks to complete after his mother’s death, Samuel sets out on a journey to find his father and grandmother, leaving him starved and desperate. He then discovers that he can hear voices, voices [...]

This story of magical realism follows the emotional story of Samuel leaving his home after becoming an orphan. Samuel goes to find his grandmother. In the process, he hides in what he believes to be a cave. Turns out, the cave is the head of a statue from a famous Brazilian saint. While hiding in the head of the statue he hears a beautiful sound and want to continue to hear it but the prayers and worries of patrons overcloud it. He realizes he can answer the prayers so he does so, restoring Braz [...]

Ta [...]

The Head of the Saint is the tale of the captivating journey of 15-year-old Samuel’s quest to fulfill his mother’s dying wishes. His quest leads him to be living in the head of St. Anthony, which is part of the incomplete statue for the saint in Candeia, a small town in Brazil. Inside the head of St. Anthony, Samuel discovers that he can hear the prayers of people in the town. Candeia, cursed by the disgrace of the statue of St. Anthony, is nearly deserted. Samuel’s efforts to answer the p [...]

I read this as sort of a short traditional oral prose that was finally written down. I haven't done any research into the background of this book but I do really enjoy the style of writing. It was a little confusing at certain instances; when the author switches from one narrator to another with no forewarning but all-in-all it read very well.I also quite enjoyed the point of view from Samuel. He was refreshing in that he was not a perfect protagonist. While we weren't entirely immersed in his t [...]

A very clever story that has different plotlines that eventually intertwine. An interesting and joyous read about faith, courage and forgiveness. I would recommend this to those who enjoy a peaceful but satisfying read!

ótimo livro! só acho que acabou rápido demais :}

4.5 starsRead it in one sittingPerfect for fans of Gabriel García Márquez and the magical realism genre

É bizarro, inacreditável e hipnotizante.---------How can I not [...]
