The title of this book intrigued me from the get-go. I HATE black jellybeans or black licorice. The smell alone makes me sick. Therefore, I felt an immediate connection to the book. Secondly, I love the cover. Very clever. This is a story of young love, of friendship, of wanting to do the right thing, but maybe not knowing exactly what the right thing is to do. It's a story of becoming an adult--and being expected to act like one--even though you're not quite considered one.The writing is impecca [...]
“Any Flavor Jellybeans but Black” is not your typical YA story; it’s actually both sad and sweet, hopeless and inspirational and incredibly deep. Jace is an ordinary teenager who goes to school and loves hanging out with his two best friends - Carly and Alan. The only thing that differentiates him from the rest of his peers is that any minor injury or even such an innocent incident as simple sneezing causes him to bleed profusely. Keeping his secret to himself, he adopts a fatalist’s app [...]
Fantastic book. Kenneth Harris's dark humour drew me in from the beginning and his easy-going writing style had me flying through the pages. The is a YA novel with real substance- the characters are multi-layered and real and the plot is deep and action packed. A gripping and really enjoyable read for teens and adults alike. Harris is a refreshingly new author to me and I'm looking forward to seeing what he comes up with next!
I want to start out by saying that this book is not the genre that usually sits on my bookshelf, as I can have a hard time becoming attached to a coming of age tale, or that of a teenage plot line. That being said, I finished this book without putting it down (Okay, I had read two chapters ages ago, got distracted by the fall air and there it sat on my bookshelf). When I picked it up again I started from the beginning, because I wanted to be sure I was experiencing the whole story, and I did not [...]
OK, this book has a unique storyline and there were times when I was straight-up laughing out loud, no matter where I was. Even though there was a melancholic theme where the main character has a bleeding disorder and thinks he's going to die anytime, there was a lot of comedy with an entertaining plot theme. The main character is witty and charming, and his love for his best friend is contagious. I recommend anyone to read this!
