I was one of the beta readers for Stormfate, so this review is for the edition I received. My initial thoughts on the premise were intrigue and curiosity. A storm that makes the realm of Padallia quake with fear, and has the king taking his men into the dark Fallow Wood to investigate. It is immediately apparent that this storm is supernatural in nature, and it begs the question, how do you fight the elements with sword and spear? The narration is written in a way that keeps you locked into the st [...]
To start off, I would like to say that Louisa Loder has a way of creating rich words and descriptive writing. Stormfate was a fast-paced, suspenseful YA fantasy piece, mixing magics and nature to create a world of tension that will have it's readers wanting to know more. Unfortunately, that was where I was a bit disappointed. 150 words was not enough to do justice to the world she created. It felt like I had jumped in half way through the story. The action and the suspense were great, but I wish [...]
Makes me want to read all the high fantasy books in my shelf over again and again I used to read high fantasy all the time, but somehow over the course of growing up, I stopped. After reading this novella, not only am I eager to see what happens next in the full sized novel, but now I want to get back into reading the whole genre again. The author has managed to include plot twists, multiple characters, amazing dialogue, different worlds and hinted at dark conflicts and battles (internally, and [...]
I finished this book on what I thought would be a long, boring flight. Stormfate turned my flight into an incredible adventure, I literally could not put it down. Lovers of fantasy and adventure (which, let's face it, is just about everyone), you'll LOVE this one.
I received this from a Giveaway.I feel a little conflicted when writing about this book. It was enjoyable surely. Yet it felt not unfinished but as if it were part of a greater story of which I had received only a snippet. Characters were touched on and we dug a little deeper into them, but only so much so that it felt that there was so much more about them that we did not get to know. There was magic and creatures which felt as if they had deeper explanations that we were, unfortunately, not p [...]
I was ambivalent about Stormfate. Louisa has a natural talent for submersing you in her work, and some of the scenes are utterly fantastic. The book, however, jumps around a lot. The story seems to be an extended version of what should be the first few chapters of a longer novel. Structurally, it could be contracted to be made more effective, or more could be added to develop the story as a whole. It needs editing (in the spelling and grammar sense); some sentences make no sense and I feel this [...]
