This story starts with a woman finding a dead body when she comes to clean up a rental to get ready for the next renters. Sabrina Salter has fled to St. John in the US Virgin Islands after being acquitted of murdering her husband. Both were television personalities in the Boston area and the whole court case caused a media sensation that hasn't died down since the trial ended. She is constantly being vilified by a "legal expert" on one of the cable networks. Sabrina's first response it to leave [...]
On one of the US Virgin Islands, called St. John, a lady who keeps guesthouses for holidaymakers gets the shock of her life to find a guest dead. He's been shot in his villa. To start with Sabrina denies contact with the man other than escorting him to his villa. But it turns out she's not telling the truth. Her business partner Henry is conspicuously absent when the body is discovered but he's got an alibi of a casual boyfriend, putting the suspicion back on our heroine. Only, Henry isn't telli [...]
In C. Michele Dorsey's No Virgin Island, the first installment in the Sabrina Salter mystery series, this debut would take you to the tropical paradise of the Virgin Island. Sabrina Salter was a former meteorologist from Boston, who had a bit of a dark past and accused of murdering her husband. She escaped to the US Virgin Islands to leave all that behind her. But when she discovered a dead body in Villa Mascarpone, one of the Ten Villas she co-owns with Henry, her friend and business partner, i [...]
I was chuckling out loud by the end of the first chapter, which rarely happens when I read a mystery. Overall, I got quite a few laughs out of this book and had a good time reading it.I am a slow reader. I read this book in 2 days. I did set it down now and then to give myself a chance to figure out who-done-it. Despite a lifetime of reading mysteries by dozens of different authors, I did not predict the ending. Yes, the murderer was in my list of possibilities, but the ending was enough of a su [...]
A good, fun, quick read while vacationing on St. John.
Would have liked more action and suspense but it was a nice read.
Man renting house on the island of St. John, USVI, is found murdered. Very original plot but almost more soap-opera than murder mystery. Face-paced; kept my interest. But I never got much sense of the local/native flavor of the island. No mention of the wonderful accents. Were the police natives or transplants? Seemingly, everyone the heroine interacted with was a transplant or visitor. A map showing the homes (and names of people in each home) would have really added to the enjoyment. I was con [...]
I started reading this book because once in the dark past I lived in the Virgin Islands and have been to St. John. The story was entertaining and I enjoyed it. If the next book in the series wasn't so expensive I would read it.
good reading for a rainy weekend
I enjoyed the book because it described real places that I know and love on St John.
A refreshingly good first installment of this series. Sabrina Salter, a quirky and courageous character and her partner, Henry, both of whom have escaped scandal in Boston for second chances in the U. S. Virgin Islands, find themselves enmeshed in a murder and facing more scandal. The plot is creative and well-paced, and includes a nasty Geraldo Rivera type justice TV show that strives to blame Salter for another killing. Dorsey does a fine job of setting the atmosphere in the sultry and sunny p [...]
No Virgin Island is a mystery that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I loved that this book starts off with the murder and throughout the story, they are looking for the suspect. This book kept me interested because of the little secrets that just kept coming out. I didn’t care for certain parts of the book where there was a lack of description but other than that it was a book I couldn't put down. The author did an excellent job with characters and just the way the book was written; I would [...]
3.5 stars If you are looking for a mystery title perfect for summer and/or holiday reading, No Virgin Island may be just the ticket. Imagine, if you will, a mystery novel full of guest starring secondary characters, a slightly remote yet beautiful location, multiple possible suspects and main characters with legal secrets and heartache to spare. Reading like a reliably comfortable episode of Murder, She Wrote, (which I watched and loved!) C. Michele Dorsey's debut is lighter, escapist murder-mys [...]
NO VIRGIN ISLAND is a debut novel, set on St. John in the Caribbean. Sabrina Salter has left Nantucket after narrowly escaping being convicted for her husband's murder. She and her friend, Henry, have joined the other inhabitants of the island who have fled to find some semblance of obscurity there. They pooled the resources they were left with after their individual mainland debacles and have opened a property management company handling rental villas. The book opens with Sabrina walking into V [...]
A fun series. The mystery is good, the characters likeable and the setting (Caribbean) is wonderful.
Virgin or No Virgin? When I saw the cover and title of this new series, I just had to read it. Unfortunately though, it didn't quite live up to my expectations. LOL I'm still trying to figure out why the title was called "No" Virgin Island, other then the series being set in the Virgin Islands; but what does "No" have to do with it?? There was nothing in the story that pertained to the title. Maybe I missed something there but if anyone figures that out let me know please. : ) The story itsel [...]
Interesting novel with a satisfying conclusion, but I was a little disappointed, since it was billed as a Sabrina Salter mystery, that Sabrina herself doesn't actually do any sleuthing. The clues are presented in scenes from the points of view of several characters in addition to Sabrina, and the crucial revelation comes in a scene in which she isn't present. I enjoyed the mystery as a stand alone but I have a hard time thinking of the protagonist an amateur detective who might go on to solve ot [...]
A Great Mystery set in an exotic localeThe story starts off with a bang—well, the bang had already occurred, but the dead body was there right away. Michele Dorsey kept up the pace all the way to the end. I look forward to seeing the main character, Sabrina Salter, in future novels. She has a complicated past, of which only part has been revealed in this book. Smart, sassy, and sexy, Sabrina is the kind of main character who can carry a series.I had spent a week on St. John years ago, and I lo [...]
Sabrina Salter has escaped a past in Boston, hoping to enjoy her new life in St. John. However, trouble finds her in the US Virgin Islands when she arrives to clean one of the villas she maintains only to find the tenant dead in the outside hammock. Will the police see her as the prime suspect? Can she live through something like this again? While the setting may be a paradise, the tone is more somber given Sabrina’s past. I enjoyed the juxtaposition and getting to know the strong characters. T [...]
About a year ago I was flirping around my condo in my flippers excitedly counting down the days until a romantic vacation on St. John. The trip exceeded expectations and when I read a review for a mystery set there I ordered a few for the library and put it on hold. The folks that love St. John will enjoy the familiar locations and characters who end up there hoping to escape their past. The mystery isn't hard to figure out-I had it in the first 20 pages or so but its a nice story. There is a si [...]
Michele Dorsey plucks you out of wherever you live and lands you on St. John for this exciting debut mystery. Sabrina Salter had a rocky past, which is revealed to us gradually, and suddenly is confronted with murder again. The layers of this story are revealed gradually and deftly, ending up with a cliffhanger, quite literally. I loved Sabrina's pal Henry, and her faithful swimming dog, Girlfriend, and I can't wait to read the next installment in these characters' lives.
Enjoyable and entertaining novelI have never read any of the author's books, and came across this one by accident when looking for something to read on . This one caught my attention. Who wouldn't love a good mystery set in the beautiful Caribbean, with an interesting assortment of characters. Not only that, but the title perked my attention. I'm now looking forward to reading other books by C. MICHELE DORSEY! Hope to find them on Kindle Unlimited.
Sabrina Salter and her friend Henry both flee to the island of St. John after scandal and media attention uprooted their lives. When Sabrina discovers a dead man, it seems that all her demons are back to haunt her. But this time, she fights back, with the help of similarly wounded lawyer Neil. The dead man rented one of the villas that Sabrina and Henry's business manages, but some of the neighbors have questionable backgrounds, too.
I liked this book more than I expected after reading the first chapter. The plot is more complex than it looks at first which makes the book a page-turner. Didn't really care for the characters because their backstories seemed a bit far-fetched and nothing in their present lives interested me much. That being said, it's a good read.
I loved reading this book in the bathtub every night. The characters are really interesting and I especially loved the setting. I've never been but I loved all the setting description--made me feel like I had been there! I will read more by Michelle Dorsey!
i love the characters in this book! I read a lot of mystery books this one kept me thinking, who did it? till the end.I enjoyed the book enough to order the second ! Good plot, great characters, I love Sebrina and the island setting
Great book! Loved the characters & setting of this novel. I was very surprised at the conclusion. Did not see that coming. Saw this was C. Michele Dorsey's 1st novel, I am looking forward to reading more of her work.
We listened to this on audio but it was a quick "read". It was fun to guess the mystery as more clues were developed. The audio book reader does need to learn how to pronounce "conch"! Can't wait until the next book in this series is released.
If you've ever been to St. John, this book will bring back true memories of what it was like. The characters were written with just enough un-filled-in backstory that I want to know more. And the plot had several twists but was still believable. Looking forward to the next in the series.
Multilayered MysteryThis mystery had more levels than suspected at first. Not until the final denouement did all the pieces fall into place. The story pulled me into it as it progressed, becoming more and more complex. The ending was very satisfying.
