I really enjoyed Dead Is Better. It is yet another unique choice from Fahrenheit Press! I read this book in one sitting, it was that engaging for me.Short chapters make it super easy to read, and there is a quote about death at the beginning of each one which, personally, I thought was a great addition to the book!Full review on bibliophilebookclub
Great literature? No. The book made me laugh. I did not think the description of the book was very appealing, but it was available through Kindle Unlimited subscription, so I gave it a try. Yes, I decided that this lady's husband would not marry a dummy not much of a gamble. I have been enjoying his writing lately. Each chapter starts with a quote about death from the famous, e.g. : "Life is pleasant. Death is peaceful. It's the transition that's troublesome."We meet Charlie and the dog Rose as t [...]
This originally appeared at The Irresponsible Reader.---In its young life, Fahrenheit Press has put out some great looking titles, not your typical mystery fare. I've only read 2 (bought 1 other), so far -- but they've shared the off-kilter flavor that the Press' twitter feed/publicity displays (and descriptions for the other books indicate). I don't typically talk about publishers when I'm talking about books, but there's something about Fahrenheit's project -- and the books they put out -- tha [...]
This was another book I read for work, and, personal involvement aside, it is freakin' spectacular! I loved the quirky and dark storyline, which had just enough wry humor to make it sing rather than become sappy. While I dislike overt comparisons, in this case I feel it is respectful and proper to say it reminded me, in spirit, of the Dead Like Me TV series, which I loved. Personally, I can't wait for future additions to this series, and you should too. Read it and join me. Your attention will b [...]
I liked it! Not too heavy but just what I needed after druging through a 750 pg novel which I didn't care for. Will go on to read others by Jo Peery.
I love dogs, there are too many cats on the internet…dogs are 100 times better (at least). Look at the cover of Dead Is Better – see that paw print? That’s a love heart with toes – gimme dogs every time. But in Dead is Better the dog (Rose) is dead. Not the best way to win me over Jo Perry! However, all is not lost as even in death Rose the dog has become one of my favourite characters this year.Rose is keeping recently deceased Charles Stone company in the afterlife. Well I say afterlife [...]
Jo Perry's novel got under my skin and just wouldn't turn me loose. Dead Is Better (the title is a partial quote from Stephen King's Pet Sematary) unfolds in short bursts, like someone who's found an old-fashioned projector, screen, and a carousel of slides and is clicking his way through them. It's a pace that takes a few chapters before it becomes comfortable, but it does. Charlie continually describes himself as unlikable, but readers soon learn that his actions prove that to be a lie. It's t [...]
*** Originally reviewed on thequietknitter/ ***Charles Stone is dead, he's sure of this because he attended his own funeral. How did he die? Why did he die? He's not entirely sure, but he wants to find out and along with his (deceased) canine companion he sets about unravelling the mystery. The canine in question is a paradox to Stone, he has no idea where she came from, but she seems friendly enough. He calls her Rose and together they exist in a constant state of non-existence - I'll leave you [...]
This was quite entertaining and certainly kept me wondering how ghost detectives Charlie and his dog Rose would solve the case when they are not able to interact with the world of the living. The solution was cleverly done.Unfortunately the book is marred by the number of typos and the sense that it is padded by adding an epigraph to every single chapter (most of which don't seem to relate to the chapter specifically). Without those epigraphs the book is probably only of novella length. The most [...]
Dead is Better by Jo Perry was a really good novel. I wasn't sure what to expect but I enjoyed every minute of it. First off I love that there are two quotes from The Book Thief, my all time favorite novel. The book itself is about a man named Charles. Charles was murdered. 6 bullet holes to be exact. When he wakes up in the afterlife there is a dog there. Rose and Charles team up to find out about how and why he was murdered. How much help can a ghost be to his own murder or to anyone else's li [...]
It’s lovely when something fresh and unique comes along to breathe new life into the crime genre. Dead is Better offers a new take on the murder mystery with a dead protagonist, Charlie, who has to solve his own untimely murder and the death of his new companion and friend, Rose, the dog. With a distinctive, no-nonsense voice and dry, sardonic humour, Jo Perry delivers a different and entertaining story. After a while, I stopped reading the quotes about death that preceded each chapter as they [...]
A Brilliant and Heartfelt Mystery! Charlie and Rose captivate from page one in this pedal to the metal plot. Though Charlie was a loser in life, he is just so darn likable. And Rose will quietly steal your heart. These two ghosts walk through the land of the living, trying to untangle mysteries and right terrible wrongs. The way Perry works out the story, without breaking her own rules or inserting any ridiculous miracles, is brilliant, well-grounded within the story, and divine. A wonderful boo [...]
Let's say you've just finished reading the entire Harry Potter series and you're about to start Stephen King's Dark Tower series. Before you do, cleanse your palate with Dead Is Better. A breezy little page-turner that will give you a chance to breathe, re-think death, and give you a laugh at the same time. Thank you, Jo.
This is a wonderful book! Thoughtful and thought provoking but also a page turner. I can't wait for more from this author!
Anyone can become a hero when the situation arisesad or alive as Charles Stone is about to discoverJo Perry's debut release Dead is Better!
Interesting premise - not exactly what I expected, but a good book. I rate it 4 stars.
Charles Stone is murdered and in death he meets his companion, a murdered dog he names Rose. Together they try to find out who murdered him and why. In the process they also solve the murder of Rose. This book is the first in a series. Don't be fulled by the titles. This is the first book. The second is Dead is Best and the third is Death is Good. I don't know if she intends to write more. One of the things I like best about these books, in addition to the humor, is the respect the author accord [...]
A modestly clever mystery novel, the gimmick of which is that it's narrated by a ghost who's accompanied by a ghost dog. It should have just leaned into how slight it is, and been more fun, rather than having aspirations of depth. It's weirdly structured, too, and sort of fell off at the end, in ways that make it obvious that it's setting up to be a series, which I'm not inclined to pursue further.
This was a quick, entertaining read and it really worked (I didn't expect it to, given it contained a ghost dog). I will definitely be reading more of this author's work, she is great at plotting and characterisation .
I have to say I am quite speechless after reading this novel. I honestly don't know what I was expecting before reading the book but whatever I was expecting, this story went above and beyond. To wake up to find out your dead must be a massive shock but having to deal with it all on your own, well I would find it more than daunting. The only other being that seems to be in the same position as Charles is a dog.Don't get me wrong, I think any company would be more than welcome but Charles has so m [...]
Dead is Better by Jo Perry, mystery.Brilliant! Each chapter is preceded by a quote on death from an author of note, which makes it even more fun. Protagonist is a dead guy, with a dog that he doesn't recognize. Plot concerns his/their search for who killed him/them and the reasons why, with the eventual goal of revenge, at least at the outset. The latter no small task for the dead! Other considerations turn up.Plotting is brilliant, but then married to Thomas Perry (Jane Whitefield series, Butch [...]
I love the idea of a dead man--fat, Jewish, dulcimer-playing--as a detective, and a skinny, mistreated dead dog as his sidekick. This is a very clever departure from the usual murder mystery. I love that the story is set in my hometown of Los Angeles. I even like--or at least am not bothered by--the very short paragraphs, often only one sentence long. But there are two things I dislike greatly: 1)The number of quotes--82, if I counted right--that precede each short chapter. It's overwhelming. Aft [...]
I can't understand all the five star reviews of this book. Interesting concept, sure, but I just couldn't get into it. I found the quotes about death far too numerous and frequent - it's as if the author googled "quotes about death" and then used the results to turn what should have been a short story into a full-length novel. There is nothing compelling about the main character, and the many grammatical errors were distracting. Overall extremely disappointing given the hype.
Charles is dead and he's stuck in some kind of limbo with only a dead dog for company. Why is he there? What does the dog want him to find out? And how will he tell anyone when he works it all out? This is another quirky murder mystery from the people at Fahrenheit Press. I didn't love this the way I have loved some of the others, but it's still a lot of fun.
FrustratingNeat premise and goodhearted characters but frustrating that the main characters can't do more. I mourn them because they seem so unhappy.
