Dang, three murders in one tiny novella is a lot, to be honest. I liked it, it was a quick little mystery that tides the reader over to the second book. I just wish that we got to see Cole; he's missing from this installment. And a note to mystery lovers; the suspects are easy to figure out, which can be annoying.
Well, loved the first one, hated the second one, and then didn't like this one either. I was just bored ☹ Such a shame.
I decided to read Born of Corruption in preparation for Born of Deception's release, but was kind of disappointed by it. Narrated by Anna's friend Cynthia, the story takes place at Anna's going away party at Cynthia's house, where an unexpected tragedy takes place that needs to be solved by the remaining partygoers. It was basically like a 1920s YA novella version of Clue, expect not anywhere near as good. I think that it had the potential to be a cool little story, but it was just too short to [...]
Wow, what a great short story! Really enjoyed it, the party and the game, and the shootings and the deaths! Great mystery, really enjoyed it!
This is a mini-review (of sorts) since Born of Corruption clocks in at around 60 pages but I still wanted to share my thoughts on it. I'd really enjoyed the first book, Born of Illusion so I was looking forward to returning to Anna and her New-York flapper lifestyle. Born of Corruption is meant to bridge the gap between book 1 and it's sequel Born of Deception that just came out so i figured now was the perfect time to dig in.Born of Corruption mixes things up a bit - it's not told from our usua [...]
I loved Cynthia in Born of Illusion so this short was an easy sell. Cool premise - an in-house murder which one reviewer on here quite aptly tagged as reminiscnet of the old boardgame Clue - and Brown is an absolute expert at calling up the atmosphere of the Roaring Twenties and all the original goodfellas and molls therein. The stakes were shaky here, though and (gasp!) I think I would have liked the entire tale a whole lot better if Cynthia would have ended up falling for sexy bad-boy Nico (who [...]
This short little story was okay, but not as good as I was hoping it to be. I really enjoyed Born of Illusion so I had rather high hopes for this short story, but was kind of disappointed. I feel like I just didn't enjoy this story as much because Cynthia isn't nearly as interesting to me as Anna is. I read this story because I was excited to read Born of Deception, which I hope will be much better.
I really enjoyed this novella. I thought it was a great continuation of the story from "Born of Illusion" and I loved how it was told from Cynthia's perspective. However, although it was a great read, I really wish the character of Cole was included. He played a large role in the first novel and his exclusion from this storyline was disappointing. Overall, the story was great and I can't wait to read "Born of Deception!"
It's about time Cynthia had her own narration in the story! I really like her - she's bubbly, sweet, fun and caring - and I liked her more when she helped Anna with the money without any hesitation (even if she doesn't know what it's for).Cynthia is one extraordinary friend and she deserves to be loved. I hope she has a greater role in the long run.
I loved this one! It was an interesting novella with a great plot (not just one of those simple novellas with no real 'meat' to the story) and I was hooked on it! I definitely would recommend this series to others!
This short book was a kind of nice read from a new perspective; unfortunately I am not a big fan of side characters and Cynthia Gaylord is far from my favourite character, I think it is the way she hangs off her husband that annoys me The story itself is not bad though.
This book was too short to make you feel invested in what was happening. I didn't like or believe it.
I liked this novella very much and it was a great refresher for this series.
Not as fun as the first book. More focused on the 20's lifestyle than magic. In fact there was little to no magic in this one at all. But still a good short story.
Nice little novella, liked the different perspective. Can't wait for the next book.
Expected publication: May 6th 2014 by Balzer + Bray
Everything wrapped up a little too neatly, and I thought the outcome was fairly predictable, but it was a decent little novella.
