well this book took me a quite a while to read, but in the end I’d definitely say it was worth it! I loved how everything came together, and I enjoyed reading this extraordinary novel! The author writes VERY well… very descriptive and strong and we feel like we are there almost like watching a movie or something. The editing was pretty good, only a few things here and there… A wonderful novel to just get lost in and enjoy the author’s lovely, strong narrative and beautiful prose. The con [...]

A review of Lily's Story from George Clark, a journalism professor:"Don Gutteridge's 'Lily's Story' is a tour de force, chronicling the life of an orphaned child in Upper Canada, facing the trials and tribulations of rural and small town life in the mid nineteenth to the early twentieth century, and doing it all through the eyes of a woman and the special challenges they faced.Lily is a tough nut, willing to fight her corner when necessary but also willing to use hard work and common sense to ac [...]
Review of Lily’s Story by Tracy A Fischer for Reader’s Favorite Reviews.Wow. Just wow. I’m not sure if that’s enough statement for a review, but those were my thoughts when I finished Don Gutteridge’s book, Lily’s Story. The beautifully wrought historical epic follows our protagonist, Lily, as she traverses through life, from her childhood with a difficult father to her life as an old woman. In between, she experiences a whole lot, from the Underground Railroad that brought American [...]
Beginning in Lambton County, Ontario in 1840, Lily’s Story follows Lily on the extraordinary journey that is her life. Living most of her life as an orphan after the death of her mother and abandonment by her father, Lily makes her way in a difficult world. Uneducated and with little support from her remaining family, she finds herself in some interesting situations; through marriages, babies, physical labour, and abuse, Lily tries to find her place in the world and to look after those around [...]
Plenty of novels have been written about frontier days and frontier gals, but Lily’s Story is different: it doesn’t just tell her story, it immerses readers in the sights, sounds and sentiments of her times . . . There’s a big difference between a novel that describes events and one that plunges the reader into its setting and world. Gutteridge holds the ability to bring this strange frontier world to life as readers absorb Lily’s interests, fascination with the unknown, and reactions to [...]
I was genuinely surprised by how much I liked “Lily’s Story” by Don Gutteridge. I admit it did take me a bit of time before I felt really hooked in the story, but once I was I was all in. I liked it for so many different reasons, first the writing was stellar. The strong word choice and fluid prose makes it a very easy book to just get lost in. There are enough descriptions where you can picture everything perfectly, but not so much that it bogs down the pacing. I almost feel like I just r [...]
4.5 starsFrom the opening pages of “Lily’s Story” I knew it would be different from the books I’ve been reading lately and I was right! To say this is totally unlike anything I’ve ever read before would be an understatement! I’m not sure how to even describe this book as SO much happens, and it seems to touch on so many elements, themes, and subjects. It is presented almost like a nonfiction story as the events are so realistic, yet it is clearly fiction.(Although the lengthy bibliog [...]
"Lily’s Story” by Don Gutteridge is an amazing and epic piece of historical fiction! One of the most original and well-crafted novels I’ve read in a long time. I was completely drawn in from the get-go, and absolutely loved Mr. Gutteridge’s use of description of the different scenery and locales, and his attention to historical detail. There is something of everything… action, drama, history, strength and survival, relationships… Excellent editing, (some minor formatting glitches asi [...]
In Lily’s story, Don Gutteridge proves yet again his mastery of historical fiction, and his unique ability to conjure up characters who are both engaging, and believable. Following the long life of an original Upper Canada pioneer woman, Lily’s Story plays out on the wonderfully rich background of early colonial Ontario that is both painstakingly researched, and immediately accessible to the reader. One can almost smell the pine and moss of Lily’s childhood homestead. Gutteridge also adds [...]
Really enjoyed reading Lily's Story. I know Point Edward as it is now so it was interesting reading how it was back then. Loved the characters in this story. They were all very real. Heard about the "pet crow" from my father-in-law so it was great to read about it in the book.I really liked the way the story ended. So glad that Lily had her own family with after all that she had endured. Nice way to bring it around full circle!
Lily's Story captivates. Gutteridge's history is expansive; a brilliant chronicle of early North America - the quiet agonies of pioneer life, the corrupt violence of railway building, the catastrophe of world war. Gutteridge's Lily bears witness to this violent sweep of event as her world contracts, finding solace in the poetry of memory. This is literature at its bestJohn Gutteridge

The book was too long and confusing.
Fabulous, sorry it had to end.
