Thanks to author and GR friend Christopher Conlon for kindly providing an advance review copy. This collection of stories offers us a variety of scenarios and characters. They range from science fiction to horror to fiction that is quite realistic and tragic. But there are some common themes which serve to link the stories despite the differences in genre, point of view, setting and tone. Some of these themes are indicated by the key words in the title. Oblivion is something that is sought by som [...]
Conlon's short story collection features six "Stories of Violation," and anyone familiar with his work knows what to be in for; those who aren't need to take note. The opening tale 'The Oblivion Room' features a woman who finds herself captive in a pitch-black, brick cylinder. She attempts to survive by creating a mental memoir and eventually discovers a way to escapert-of. Claustrophobes be warned. In 'On Tuesday All The Rain Fell From The Sky,' a man murders his family then goes to work as if n [...]
There have been so many incredible books of short "weird noir horror" stories coming out over the past few year I am starting to have trouble keeping up. There are of course a few that stick out because of their greatness such as Laird Barron's The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All and Nathan Ballingrud's North American Lake Monsters. Both of those books changed the way I look at fiction, especially short stories. With that being said Christopher Conlon's The Oblivion Room is definitely one of [...]
4 AND 1/2 STARSChristopher Conlon's new collection of short stories and novellas is, like all his work, an exhilarating experience. The author has a real talent for believable dialogue and an uncanny way of describing body language that informs the reader of the character's emotions without them having to speak a single word. Contained in this collection are five stories, one of which is a superb novella and is a must read for any fan of dark fiction, regardless of genre. My two favorite stories [...]
I bought this after I had seen a friend give this collection a great review. There's not a bad story in this book, but the standout for me was the novella, "Welcome Jean Krupa, World's Greatest Girl Drummer!" Highly recommended, and I look forward to reading more of Conlon's work.
Chris Conlon never disappoints.
I read the first two stories. They weren't bad, but they didn't "grab" me either. I have a huge pile of stuff to read right now, so I won't be finishing the rest any time soon. Maybe later.
Uneven anthology. Some stories are much better than others. It's . Different.
