“This was Venice, the flattering and suspect beauty - this city, half fairy tale and half tourist trap, in whose insalubrious air the arts once rankly and voluptuously blossomed, where composers have been inspired to lulling tones of somniferous eroticism.” --Paul Thomas Mann, German novelist, penned these words in his book Death in Venice. Turn back the clock to 18th century and find Venice as a lover's paradise, where every men end up with more than 1 lover in their lifetime in Venice and [...]

I’ve had this book on my ‘to read’ list for a while now, because I love Elizabeth’s writing and because I adore the setting: Venice. But I put off reading it until now because my last novel, The Echoes of Love, is also set in Venice, and I didn’t want to confuse myself in my writing. I’m so glad I kept hold of the book because I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.There is so much emotion; from the opening, when we encounter the heroine trapped in a loveless and cruel marriage, I was so en [...]

First off I didn't think i'd like this book so much! I just thought that it'd just be another cheesy and badly sewn together romance full of 'quick shadowed glances filled with desire'. Yes they annoy me. But Venice in The moonlight was certainly not 'one of those books'. It was very well written and I was soon sucked into the story. I loved the description in the novel, I could feel the rushing of the rivers and the myriads of emotions. And the romance oh the romance! I must admit that I wasn't [...]

After the first paragraph I was hooked. The lavish setting in Venice during carnival is alluring and captivating. Marietta is a head strong woman and a virtuous character that instantly won my admiration. Nico is irresistible. He entices with every encounter and becomes the love and hero for both Marietta and the reader. An intriguing mystery develops that brings the story to another level. Absolutely loved this book! It's a historical, a mystery and a romance that peaks over and over again with [...]

This is one of those novels that draws you completely into the storyline and keeps you there throughout. I found myself walking in the main character’s shoes, living through the many trials that she found herself facing. This was a light, easy read that was simultaneously thought provoking and emotionally charged. McKenna’s descriptions paint a brilliant picture of Venice’s carnivale, leading you deeper and deeper into this remarkable world. Each and every aspect of the novel is developed [...]

Genre: historical romanceAuthor: Elizabeth McKenna Book: Venice in the MoonlightMy Star Rating: 4 out of 5Will I read I read it again? YesI really enjoyed this read. I loved how the author mixed romance with mystery. I loved how she portrayed her characters and I loved them all. (Well except for the bad people in here) I really hated Marietta husband and his mother! The author did a wonderful job on this book because she made me feel things for the characters. I really wish I could tell you why! [...]

Every week or so, I get an email from an author asking me to read and review their recently published novel. Most of the time I decline, either because my To Read stack is about to topple over and I don't have time, or the book doesn't seem to be in a genre that I would enjoy. I would hate to agree to read a book I don't have time to read, then skim through it and give a less than full effort review. This week I happened to be taking a bit of a respite from the books I agreed to read for NetGall [...]

VENICE IN THE MOONLIGHT is refreshingly different in several ways. -The majority of historicals are usually set in England, Scotland, France, Rome, or Florence. Beautifully decadent, declining Venice, while not unique, isn’t the norm. It is, however, the perfect setting for Marietta and Nico’s tale. -Marietta isn’t typical. Widowed at twenty her marriage was far from happy. Marietta was abused by not only Dario, her husband, but also her mother in law. When Signora Gatti turns her out Mari [...]

I won a copy of this book from First Reads.Rating: 2.5 starsSet in the 1700s, a young widow returns home to Venice to reconnect with her estranged father, only to discover that he has died under suspicious circumstances. Taking matters into her own hands, she begins looking into his death, only to discover that the father of the man she is falling for may be involved. This book was simply 'ok' in my opinion - oddly enough, that's the most accurate way to describe it. While I didn't hate it, I di [...]

As a lover of Venice, this book captured my interest from the outset. The fact it was set in the 18th century during Carnevale only added to the allure and by weaving in historical characters so closely linked with the city in Foscari and Casanova, there was both a real sense of magic and history in the tale. The only thing preventing a five star rating was that I found the idea of Marietta's night-time excursions into the homes of some of the wealthiest men in Venice slightly implausible, althou [...]

This story of a young woman artist in eighteenth century Venice is entertaining and has some unusual twists, as for instance in the hero, who is blind. The pacing is fast moving and the characters are interesting. The plot — well, devil worshiping seems a bit out of place in this setting and at this time -- but hey, it’s fiction. The heroine, who is as often dressed in her father’s clothes as in dresses, is engaging. All in all, a quick and entertaining read. If I have any quibble it is th [...]

Thoroughly enjoyed this story. It was a great, short read.but even though short in length it was still emotionally charged . This book had you feeling every emotion possible and both of the main characters pulled at your heart strings! Fell in love a little with Nico myself and I adored "Kitty. I loved the strongness of her character and was glad her spunk was still alive after all she has been through. This book was a great escape and I enjoyed every page of it. Although short in length and fas [...]

I found Venice in the Moonlight written by Elizabeth McKenna to be a riveting and mysterious novel. She combines mystery, romance, vengeance, grief, and intrigue throughout the story. Her main character Marietta Gatti is revealed to be a strong, confident and courageous young woman who will go to any lengths to find the truth. The beautiful pictures she creates in mere words makes you feel like you are right in the setting along with the main characters. If you like romance and mystery, I highly r [...]

I read the whole thing in one sitting. An adult version of a Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys style mystery. It grabed me from the first page and held me right to the end.

I loved this short read. I only wished it was longer. Mckenna tells the story so vividly that you feel like you are there in the middle of everything. I would recommend it to everyone to read.

The heroine Marietta is unhappily married to the womanizing and neglectful Dario Gatti who suddenly dies after eating bad meatAfter his death she is summoned and told unceremoniously by her horrible mother in law to get out.She will get an yearly allowance but she is no longer a part of their family. She was always hated by the Signora Gatti for not being good enough for her son and when she finds out the Signora has had all her paintings burned.Marietta says good riddance and leaves feeling she [...]

Marietta Gatti is the daughter of an artist, and as such she is not in the upper echelon of the nobility in Venice. Not until, that is, her father forces her to marry into it. Marietta hates her husband, and I can’t say I blame her. She is an independent woman in a time when women were playthings, and this quote was my favorite:The family money could buy almost anything – anything except a place in heaven. Her husband roasted in hell. She also harbors hatred for her father, who not only left [...]

Full review and images available on MINA'S BOOKSHELF minadecaro/2014/0Elizabeth McKenna's choice of historical setting is where this novella scored high with me: a mid-eighteenth century Venice strikes as rather unusual in a sea of 'look-alike' Regency England HRN and, for this reason, her 'clean' romance shines in an interestingly different llight. Had the author further developed her original plot into a full-length novel, exploiting with more conviction the Enlightenment theme and the atmosph [...]

With the gorgeous setting of 18th Venice during the mysterious season of Carnevale, the story features a secret society, murder, suspense, and a love story. Elizabeth McKenna's latest novel, Venice in the Moonlight, was an enjoyable short read (it's only 186 pages). But perhaps it was too shorte conflicts were well developed but were resolved too quickly, in my opinion. There wasn't much depth to the resolutions , which left me wanting for more explanation. The story follows young Marietta - a wi [...]

Elizabeth McKennaWhat do you get when you mix together a sexy and sensual blind man with a battered and unwanted widow in Venice during Carnival? An adventurous love story with twists and turns. Just when I was ready to start one book by a popular author, something new floated across my radar. Venice in the Moonlight, a mid-18th century Italian romance, seized my attention right away; I just couldn't pass up the promise of intrigues, masquerades, and seductions in such an exotic setting. Move over, Ms. Jeffries!I had an easy time falling into Marietta's life as a young, ignored wife of a philandering husband and reviled daughter-in-law forced out of her home upon her husband's death. Ho [...]

Darkness and passion in 1750's Venice. This story had me with the first line! The image portrayed is wonderful! A surreal moment! That moment captures with a totally restrained focus the helplessness and seething anger of Marietta Gatti, set against the background of a dysfunctional marriage and family. So much is weighted by so few words.A despicable husband and an even more terrible mother-in-law have been the bane of Marietta's life for the past 5 years. When released, or rather driven from that [...]

boombabyreviews.miadarien/Venice in the Moonlight is a story that brings to life things I loved when I was a young woman beginning in my romance reading life. A dark hero with a past that makes you wish to change him, a strong heroine willing to risk all to right wrongs, a setting in a land I will never see. But I did not find enough original, except maybe the reason for the thriller sub-plot, which made it stand out to me.It had the makings of a story that could pull you into the intrigue but I [...]

Venice in the Moonlight is an attractive historical romance with all the ingredients to be a must read in the genre. Murder, secret alliances, a brave woman and a seducer are the ingredients of a story that you won’t be able to put down. After losing her husband and being banished by her mother-in-law, Marietta comes back to her hometown only to find out that her father is dead and maybe his death was no accident. An encounter with some English travelers and a man from one of the wealthiest fam [...]
