Margie Miklas shares her much anticipated, 3 month trip to Italy with the readers. The writing is simple, clear and fluent, making you feel as if you are right there with her. Full of enthusiasm and curiosity to learn as much as possible, Margie Miklas shares every little detail with the readers. I liked the book so much, I actually finished it in one day! Highly recommend it!
I lived in Italy, in the "heel of the boot" for three years while in the Air Force. I loved it. And so when I heard Ms. Miklas released a book on traveling through Italy, I jumped on it. Her brave journey, taken alone some time after the loss of her husband (who also loved to travel), was an adventure in discovery, both in the countryside and in herself. The book is a bit like a cross between a travelogue and a diary, and there are some instances where it is a bit too "we went here, and then wen [...]
I'm not much of a world travelerever, now I can say that I've been to Italy without leaving my home to do it.This lovely Memoir of a solo journey to Italy, depicts a three month extensive tour of not only well known cities like Venice and Vatican City, but also the out of the way vistas and villas that are not so well known. The author has depicted the sights, sounds, smells, as well as the textures of this picturesque country.I applaud the courage it must have taken this author to pack up and t [...]
Margie's book is a must read for anyone planning a trip to Italy or who just may want to venture there in the mind's eye. I love how i can hear her voice as I read it as if she is sitting across the table from me telling me about her trip. The language is simple and genuine. You can hear her excitement about each place that she visits. Making this trip is now on my bucket list after reading her book.
I really enjoyed this book. I missed the fact that there were no photos, but was able to find them on her blog, so that was a nice bonus. It was nice reading about places I just returned from and also reading about places I have yet to venture too. Recommend.
Margie Miklas certainly has a love affair with Italy, but I would go one step further to add that there is also a respect and understanding of the Italian people and culture as well. There is something beautifully charming about this simple journal chronicling Miklas' trip through Italy that leaves the reader smiling at the end of each chapter. The writing is straightforward, descriptive, and honest, and while Miklas clearly has knowledge of Italy, its culture, and language, she never leaves her [...]
Whereas I applaud the author's courage and sense of adventure in traveling throughout Italy on her own, her book, I think, is poorly written. Or as she would apparently write that sentence, "The author had courage AND traveled around Italy by herself. She wrote a book AND it is not well-written." Most sentences are equal in length, compound in structure using "and", and use the same words and thoughts over and over. "What could be better than this?" as she wrote continually; well, some variation [...]
I changed the rating to four from 3.5 stars. I enjoyed the book a lot. I really appreciated her tips and respect for Italy and its people. The writing is quite simple, making it very accessible. Margie is extremely likeable both on page and by the sounds of it, in person. There are times where more details and descriptions would have been helpful. I say this a someone who generally dislikes too much of either. I admire her tremendously for making this solo journey. It certainly gave me a lot of [...]
Loved Margie's willingness to take on Italy herself, although the reader discovers she has many friends/relatives there! She recounts each village and adventure so I felt I was by her side.
