The author gives a moving story about Henrietta Lacks past, her family and the legacy that she left behind through her immortal cells, also known as HeLa cells by many scientists. These cells have become one of the most important tools in modern science for research and development that lead to medical discoveries today on cancerous tissue growth, medicines, vaccines, etc. What many doesn't know was the betrayal and unjust history of how these cells were obtained and distributed without the owne [...]

This book should be required reading for everyone. It is well researched, well written, and incredibly timely. With all the DNA investigations and genome information available, we all need to think about the broader picture of what all this means. This book is educational on many levels and truly causes any reader to think about the consequences of medical information from their own history floating around in the clouds. I never really thought much about the privacy issues, but this book opened [...]

An intriguing book, Amazing how much came from the studies conducted with Henrietta Lacks' cells. But frustrating that all the people and agencies made money from the experimentation and how the family still was struggling. Things have certainly changed, or you would hope so, since her cells were first harvested. Hopefully the medical field is more forthcoming about taking and using a person's cells. I know we have signed papers to indicate whether we would approve the use of materials removed i [...]

Loved this book, not just for the science of it but for the human tale that accompanied it. I had really never thought about ownership of biological material or considered the ownership's impact on future scientific advances. The author's research was compelling and made the reader see both sides of the issue. Very intriguing subjects and a very human treatment.

This was one of the most amazing books I have read. It took me on an emotional rollercoaster through all the horror of what Henrietta and her family as well as other poor souls in that era. It deals a lot with scientific facts that may be boring to some, but I found it all intriguing. It is definitely worth reading.

Bought the wrong book on Kindle, thinking this was the original "immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks". Still very interesting background and makes me want to read the original even more now. Genetic links to one specific female? Amazing. Plus I learned that there are industires specializing in selling genetic material for research. Cool!

This was a very interesting book. I learned a lot about cell research, although I didnt completely understand everything I read. It is disturbing what doctors and researchers do without our knmowlege. My favorite part of the book was Henrietta's family and their journey when they found out about their mother's cells.

Very well written. A subject that any other author, I believe, could have made REALLY dry and boring. I learned a lot and can now much more appreciate the personality this woman was, prior to touching almost all of our lives in one way or another.

This particular work, in stark contrast to the book upon which it feeds like a parasite, struck me as narcicistic (spelling?) and merely an attempt to extract useless value out of the good work done in the actual book.

great combination of facts and storytelling

Could not get into this book.

What an amazing story. It really provokes a lot of thought.

Excellent book. Insightful and well written.

Loved it!

One of the nicer biographies that I've read.

More than you want to know, but a fascinating and well written factual story.
