5 out of 5 on a nonfiction book doesn't mean you agree with every word, but instead in this case it means I am DAMN impressed with his research. It also means I am going to try to get my hands on more of what he has written. The mentioning of the bombing of Al-Shifa in Sudan for instance, and the ramifications of that - were in and of themselves important pieces of information, let alone all the outlining of Iraq, Afghanistan, Indonesia, and Australia. I am a better informed more curious person [...]

This is ESSENTIAL reading for anyone who is a fan of Noam Chomsky, George Monbiot, Naomi Klein or the truth. It deals succinctly with the exposure of corporate greed and it's effects on human populations, debunking of governmental & corporate propaganda and many more things. It is a long time since a factual book has set my synapses firing on all cylinders as vividly as reading John Pilger's work. If you want a book that will put iron in your spine, take an active role in the world around you [...]

John Pilger is without doubt, one of the most insightful journalists of our time. His courage to portray the truth is the subject of both harsh criticism and even hatred. Yet there is also those who understand that his dedication to expose the reality of the stories he covers, is in fact a love affair with justice. Something that very few journalists even know what means any more. And I speak as a one. There is nothing more to be said about this book than that it is full of details and truth and [...]

i was recommended pilger as a more readable author than chomsky and i certainly had less difficulty getting into this clearly constructed book with it's 4 concisely laid out tales of social woe. pilger's narrative line woven w/facts keeps the story engaging and morbidly educational. probably owing to his journalistic approach (as opposed to chomsky's analytical) there is also a great sense of 'the man in the field' much of the time which adds another dimension of (perceived at least) reality. de [...]

I enjoy reading investigative journalistic readings, particularly this one. This book is brilliant, heavy but light. Pilger uses the language which is easy for us to understand and the topics he has chosen touched our lives. A true eye opener to those who have not been exposed to what is really happening to this world. I have bought three copies and gave them away to my friends. My own copy, unfortunately, has not been returned. If you do have a chance, please read this book and let it touch you [...]

John Pilger was my inspiration for taking up investigative journalism so many decades ago. His work, I think, should be mandatory reading/viewing for those hoping to inform themselves beyond the too often homogenised, ill-researched reports which proliferate in mainstream media. This book may shock and upset - but it will also enlighten. Pilger writes in an easy, lucid style. A journalist of the utmost courage and integrity - this book did not disappoint,

Picked mostly for the title, this book is simply too sad and horrific in it's truth to be very enjoyable. Just page after relentless page of goverment complicity in genocides and mass starvations around the world. Very well researched and backed up by documentation it shows how political figures blatently use the ignorance of populaces to get away with EvIL.

***** The Great Game*****These four essays are twenty years old now, yet they hold resonance today like never before. For anyone looking to become a journalist, thisis the shining example of how it's done. Pilger is a monolith of truth, and has been a becon of hope amongst the propagated lies put out by state machinery. If, like me, you're new Pilger, I would start watching the decades worth of documentaries he has put out (nearly all on YouTube), especiallyThe Coming War on China , which was on [...]

Bold and disillusioning. I will not comment as to who is right and who is wrong but this book sure shakes you out of complacency. It makes you think how deep the propaganda professed by the west runs, and makes you question the premises you base your beliefs upon. And its not just about the propaganda run by the west but also by the political factions in your country, often supported (sometime intentionally and sometimes unintentionally) by the media, feeding us the most contrived version of eve [...]

Fabulous reading! Even though this book covers a lot of factual things through out the chapters, but the journalistic style Pilger exhibit just made it easy to chew. One fact shocking about what this book uncovers is about Indonesia. I never really know about it before I read Pilger's. It has to be admitted how the state and corporations are now ruling the world; a lot of documentaries had been made to expose it. However, reading this does not has to make us pessimistic (on how less we can reall [...]

Hmm, 1 million dead Indonesians sounds like rather a lot. Other things I sort of absorbed from this: effects of economic sanctions on post Gulf War Iraq, use of depleted uranium, small percentage of weapons being used actually being smart bombs, some talk about cluster bombs, race to control Caspian sea resources, and Australia's treatment of the Aborigines (seems like sort of an ill-fitting chapter?)Would be curious to see what my right-leaning and libertarian-leaning friends make of this book. [...]

A closer look at the impact of US policy on many small (and large but overlooked) places in the world. It is a counterpoint to conventional history and I require it when I can. Students love it and are gratefully shocked. They are especially surprised by the intense look at US/Indonesian relations.

I would give this work six stars if it were possible. John Pilger is courageous to a fault. His tireless pursuit of justice for those without voices is simply heroic. This book exposes the nature of neo-colonial/imperialist forces at work in the Third World, and the true nature of empire.

Journalism at it's finest. Pilger is a hero. Scrupulous and brave.

John Pilger is a fantastic journalist, but this book is a collection of essays so it's not a relaxing easy read. Worthwhile though if you're a Pilger fan.

The Model Pupil. The Great Game. Must read essays.

This is the second time I picked up something from John Pilger and have not been disappointed either time. I got this book thinking it was written recently but found out it was penned in 2003/04 and this is only an updated edition with a new preface and some additions at the end of each chapter. This book has four chapters dealing with Indonesia, Afghanistan, Iraq and to my surprise Australia. I am already aware of neo-capitalism engulfing developing nations in the form of IMF & World Bank re [...]

Well written book but the guy is very liberal and certainly doesn't like corporations or governments. it was pretty one sided against the ruling parties.

3.5 and mainly because it's dated (although the facts and arguments remain valid). Wish I'd read it a few years ago.

The history portion is great, the rest is fine if you've never heard it before

We have 50 per cent of the world’s wealth but only 6.3 percent of its population. In this situation, our real job in the coming period . . . is to maintain this position of disparity. To do so, we have to dispense with all sentimentality . . . we should cease thinking about human rights, the raising of living standards and democratization - George Kennan, US strategic planner, 1948. The lines from page 117 are most crucial lines and it answers all the questions people are asking from America. W [...]

A superb anthology of four standalone essays from the fearless and ever-tenacious John Pilger. Whether you are new to his writing or already very familiar with it, this one is an essential addition to his body of work. 1) 'The Model Pupil' - reveals Suharto's seizure of power in Indonesia in the 1960s and the bloody consequences that brought about the imposition of an economy that met the approval of the west. 2) 'Paying the Price' - describes the appalling suffering of ordinary Iraqis under the [...]

The book comprises four essays: on the ascendency to power of Suharto and the political killings of communist sympathizers in 1965-66, actively promoted by the United States and Britain, through logistics, money and propaganda. The essay argues how the loans given by World Bank and IMF are being subverted to the richer sections of the society - a $80 million grant led to the construction of a major five star hotel in Jakarta. The book has a heavy anti-capitalist attitute. It strongly criticizes [...]

This book is very well researched and I didn't expect any less from John Pilger. There are a lot of topics brought up with documented facts on public record and other reputable sources, and some of the things brought up would surprise your everyday closed-minded TV viewer, who believe 'the West' is morally ethical above all others, when this book shows that they are the worst. I like that the topics don't delve into the very easy and familiar territory of "conspiracy theories", which would be al [...]

Since being introduced to John Pilger in year 11 English class here in Australia in the late 90s, I've devoured every article, essay, book and documentary he's put his name to, past and present. No other journalist has continued to inform my world view quite like Pilger. He doesn't write to shape opinion or push an agenda, newspapers here in Australia won't touch him with a ten-foot pole. He writes as a journalist should write - just the facts, and in his words are the hopes that people wake up [...]
