Cucina Povera by Pamela Sheldon Johns pays homage to the peasant cuisine of Tuscany, and it's a treat for all your senses. The gorgeous photos of Andrea Wyner lure you in from the cover on through; they are bursting with color and emotion, especially those of the older women to whom so much of the information in the book is credited. The women's voices echo throughout the prose of Johns, which provides an impressive amount of background and history on Tuscan peasant culture in the first 40 pages o [...]
This handsomely- produced volume is more than just a cookbook dedicated to Tuscan country- style cuisine. It is a gastronomical travel essay on Tuscany, beautifully illustrated with photographs by Andrea Wyner; a culinary-anthropological study of the vanishing traditions of peasant life, and a historical report of how Tuscans survived famine during the Second World War. But above all, it is a door opening into the archetypal Tuscan kitchen where you can pull up a chair, sit down to a plank table [...]
The Short of It:This book includes super yummy, affordable comfort food. Perfect for those on a budget. The Rest of It:I am such a foodie. I read cookbooks like they are magazines and drool over all of the luscious photos. I was devastated (not an exaggeration) when I was forced to go gluten-free back in May. I love bread and pasta and when I learned that I’d have to skip those two items I just about fainted and then I realized that food is what you make of it. My life did not end at not having [...]
Cucina Povera is a lovely book. The pages aren't glossy but rather like smooth parchment, a pleasant feel to the touch as you turn the pages. This is a cookbook I can say I have read, like a novel, with so many stories and glorious photographs. The photos are gorgeousyou feel as if you are looking through a family member's scrapbook loaded with stories and recipes. Thoroughly enjoyed this cookbook and its wealth of accompanying photos. It includes personal stories and historical footnotes which enhance the recipes and give an understanding of how they cam to be.Esp. enjoyed the photos of real people eating in their real, not staged homes. All titles are indexed in both Italian and English. If ingredients listed are uncommon, the author gives accessible alternatives.Features many recipes that I would NOT consider povera (poor) but many that are most humble, [...]
I spent six weeks in Italy a few years ago, so I know first-hand how important the cuisine is to the people that live there. It's a way of life for them. The pictures in this book of the countrysides and the ingredients were pretty, but I didn't feel that the recipes and the foods offered were very enticing. I would have liked for there to be more pictures of the completed recipes and more food that I personally would want to cook for my family. If you're looking for a coffee table book or somet [...]
This is a beautifully illustrated book which is more like a coffee table book than a cookbook. I was so enchanted when I visited Italy so I just love the pictures of the Italian countryside in this book. There are sixty recipes included that promote seasonal cooking as well as thrifty cooking. I love the Pasta al Forno recipe which is an easy lasagna type recipe using a bechamel sauce instead of the American version using cottage cheese. The bechamel sauce as a filling is a far more superior met [...]
Cucina Provera is a cookbook that focuses on Italian peasant food. The introduction is too long and leaves the reader feeling like she is reading a narrative rather than a cookbook. While some of the recipes are interesting, the majority do not excite the audience enough to attempt the dishes. The biggest drawback of the cookbook is the extreme lack of photos. I do not understand why each dish does not have a photo to accompany it. If I am making a dish, I want to know what it will look like upo [...]
